Social work is an endeavor that can never be taught fully inside a classroom or online learning environment. Rooted in relationship development and personal service, success in social work demands practical experience and supervised exchanges with real clients. For most students, including those at the Wurzweiler School of Social Work, exposure comes through face to face fieldwork.
Fieldwork is required throughout your first and second year in the online Master of Social Work (MSW) program and will bring your social work studies to life by introducing you to diverse client types and allowing you to practice and better understand all facets of the client relationship, including:
Engagement
Assessment
Intervention
Evaluation
For students deciding to pursue the additional Gerontology and Palliative Care Embedded Certification or the Credentialed Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Counselor (CASAC) Credentialing: Gaining this experience is an especially critical component of your education. Your second-year advanced fieldwork must be completed in an agency related to that field or partially serving that population.
As you progress through the online MSW program, you will have an opportunity to focus on specific service areas, including:
These areas of emphasis will carry over into your fieldwork opportunities as you begin to integrate your classroom knowledge into client exchanges at hospitals, welfare agencies, mental health facilities, schools and more.
